"Boy In The Shadows"
The back door closed quietly, barely a soft click in the pre-dawn hour, but it was enough to jolt Sam from his restful slumber deep inside Adam's protective embrace. He lay still, the beat of Adam's heart thumping gently against his back, the man's chest rising and falling in that smooth rhythm of sleep, pressing against Sam's warm body each time he drew a breath in.
Sam became so mesmerized by every little sound Adam exhumed, every tiny shift of his body, that he nearly missed the deliberate quiet footsteps pass by the closed bedroom door. The digital clock on the night stand stated it was five-twenty-six in the morning. And Braden was just now coming back up to the house?
A smile twitched at the corner of his mouth. Adam would have a heyday with this. To preserve his boyfriend's life, though – he might want to keep it to himself.
“Was that Braden?” Adam mumbled. His warm lips were against Sam's bare shoulder and the slight scruff sprouting across his jaw and chin scratched Sam's skin in the most pleasant way, sending tiny electrical shivers racing through his body.
“I thought you were asleep.” Sam whispered, then smiled when Adam's arms tightened around him and his lips rubbed across his ear.
“I was.” He kissed Sam's ear and his hands flattened against the boy's chest then rubbed down his stomach, pressing against Sam's firm lower abdomen, pushing him back more snuggly against Adam's strong body. Already the man was feeling his oats again.
Sam smiled and squeezed his lips between his teeth to suppress the giggle that bubbled low in his throat. But even though it didn't make it up and out, Adam clearly felt it vibrate softly inside his chest.
“What's so funny?” Adam smiled against his ear, his warm breath causing Sam to shiver with delight.
“Nothing.” Sam bit his lower lip, grinning. “Go back to sleep.”
“I'm not tired anymore.” Adam pressed his hips tight against Sam's back side, making his intentions clear – as if Sam wasn't already aware of his intentions.
Twisting his head, Sam touched his lips to Adam's mouth. “A few short hours of sleep isn't enough.” he smiled. “Not after all your recent exertion.”
“Can't make myself sleep if I'm not tired.” Adam traced his tongue around the perimeter of Sam's ear. The boy squirmed and twisted his head away. Adam chuckled. “What's wrong? I thought you liked my tongue?”
Sam laughed quietly. “I do, but...”
“Butt?” Adam nodded and smirked. “So you want my tongue on your butt? Is that what you're saying?” He shrugged. “Okay then.”
Laughing again as Adam scrunched back and kissed him between the shoulder blades before beginning his decent south, Sam wriggled away from him, laughing harder as Adam's scruff tickled his sensitive spine.
“Stop it.” Sam choked on his laughter.
“I can hear you!” Braden's muffled bellow from his bedroom halted both Sam and Adam in an instant. “It's too early – knock it off!”
Sam turned over and buried his face in Adam's throat, stifling his laughter as best he could.
“Well, isn't he cranky.” Adam chuckled. “Guess he didn't get any.”
A sudden burst of laughter erupted out of Sam and he smacked Adam's chest. “Knock it off!” He bit his lip hard, about to gag on his laughs, trying to keep his voice down. “Braden will take a switch to us.”
“I said knock it off!”
Sam bit Adam's skin to prevent a squeal from exploding forth, his body shaking.
“Damn.” Adam shook his head, chortling. “That man needs to get laid.”
“Fuu-uuu-uuck.” Sam broke and rolled onto his back, his laughter bursting out, half expecting Braden to throw open their door at any moment, ready to switch them for real.
“I swear to God, boys!”
“Oh shit.” Adam dropped his face against Sam' s shoulder, busting up. “You locked the door – right?”

Sam's untamed laughter reverberated down the hall, only slightly muffled by both bedroom doors. The kid was becoming incorrigible – not without the help of his new, surprisingly cocky boyfriend. Upon first meeting the man, Adam had seemed anything but a wise-acre. Perhaps it was Sam who brought it out in him, and vice versa. They were high on each other and it seemed to be turning them both into quick-lipped little shits.
Braden groaned, but nonetheless savored the peace of mind it allowed. Sam had never been so happy in all his life. And that in itself was worth the torture of having to hear them. But it still managed to rake at his brain at times – like right now. He didn't need to listen to their activities at this moment when his body was burning him alive with the recent memory of Jessie's kisses, her warm body held tight against his.
There had been something – a quiet invitation – in her touch, her kisses – that had let him know he could have taken it further had he wished to do so. And he had wished for it. But knew better than to take such a huge step so soon. He believed Jessie's affections for him were genuine, but right now it was her lack of fear of him that was drawing her to him, making her feel safe. And that was a good thing – to a degree. He just needed to be certain it wasn't the only thing that was making her want to be with him.
You're a safe haven and she knows it.
Jessie's prime concern was Skyler. She'd admitted to being afraid of the dark, afraid to go to sleep at night for fear someone would come in and take Skyler away from her, hurt her in all the ways Jessie had been hurt. Braden quieted that fear, allowed her mind to rest and not worry about her little sister. And it touched him that she trusted him on such a deep level, when she trusted no one else. But even so...he didn't want to take her into his heart, into his bed, if that's all there was to it.
He could love her – without even trying. Could pour his heart into her and drown there. But he didn't want to be consumed by a woman who wasn't as consumed by him.
Sam's voice suddenly forced down the hall, pressed against Braden;s door; no longer the playful laughter, but the swelling sounds of passion.
“Oh god.” Braden groaned and rolled onto his stomach, pulling his pillow over his head.
